Opening the Club to outside literary events is greatly appreciated. The opportunity to meet poets and other writers and hear them read their work is a privilege.
Last Thursday’s reading by the poet George Ella Lyon was something special, extraordinary even. She, like the poets before her, have given us something real. To a person, they have not only presented themselves and their poetry in dramatic fashion, but they have also exposed their love and commitment to their art. More impressive, to me at least, is that their commitment to poetry runs deeper than a commitment to academic craft. They have embraced, revealed, demonstrated, a love of the words and language and imagination with a sense of honesty that is magnified by live readings.
